BARNSLEY marked Holocaust Memorial Day at the town hall last Monday evening.

Commemorated every year on January 27, this year’s was an especially poignant date as it marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau – the largest Nazi death camp – where more than a million people were murdered.

Almost 100 people were there to hear from Mayor of Barnsley John Clarke, South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard and leaders from Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths.

A reading from MP Dan Jarvis was read out by Coun Kevin Osborne, while pupils from Horizon Community College spoke about the Holocaust.

A candle to ‘light the darkness’ was then lit by the Reverend William Shaw and the event was chaired by Peter Fielding.

Peter said: “It’s an incredibly important event and I’d like to thank everyone who attended.”
