NINETEEN Barnsley businesses have received new food hygiene scores with very mixed results.

Nine pubs and bars were awarded five-out-of-five ratings.

They were Barnsley East Dene WMC, Falco Lounge, Wombwell’s The Junction and Birdwell Venue, Houghton Main Welfare and Sports Club, The Works, 5ives Community Sports Club, The Civic and The Old School House.

A number of Barnsley restaurants and cafes were also assessed: The Purple Mango on Doncaster Road, Asda Cafe on Old Mill Lane, Cawthorne’s Beatson House and Coffee Boy all received five-star scores. As did Nibblers in Birdwell and Gallagher’s on The Arcade. While Mad Hatters, on Doncaster Road, receive a one-out-of-five score.

Three takeaways were also given new rating.

The Sandwich Shop, on New Street, was given a five-star food hygiene rating following an assessment on December 20. And Kendray’s Atlantic Fish and Chip Shop, on Doncaster Road, also received the top score.

Five Double O, based on Doncaster Road, was given a zero-out-of-five food hygiene rating. following an assessment in December 12. The Food Hygiene Standards website shows there needs to be a major improvement in food handling, an urgent improvement in the management of food safety and an improvement in the cleanliness of the building.
