A WORLD-FAMOUS local band has welcomed an ‘outstanding young talent’ to its ranks.

Grimethorpe Colliery Band has announced its new solo baritone player.

Ed Culpin began playing at the Leicestershire Co-op Band, before moving onto Derwent Brass and more recently Carlton Main Frickley, where he performed at both the National Finals and British Open.

He is a two-time winner of the Houston Brass Band solo competition and the British Open Intermediate solo competition.

Ed said: “It’s a huge honour to take on the principal baritone seat at such a great band with so much history, I’m looking forward to many great concert and contest performances ahead.”

Ben Dixon, the band’s musical director, added: “Ed is an outstanding young talent with a very exciting future ahead of him, and we are delighted to welcome him to Grimethorpe.”
