POLICE officers conducted an operation last weekend after vandals ripped down a school fence to destroy its football pitches.
Last week ‘idiots’ cut down the fence at Netherwood Academy and drove a car onto its football pitches before shredding up the Astroturf.
The issue of off-road vehicles tearing up local pitches has been a problem for some time – prompting the police to attempt to clamp down on the issue.
A spokesperson for Barnsley South’s Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We focused this operation in the Wombwell area, specifically around the TPT and Netherwood.
“This is after a number of reports of the illegal use of vehicles on the grounds and off-road bikes around the pit pond.
“Officers were in plain vehicles who acted as spotters.
“Unfortunately no vehicles were seized, however intelligence was gathered, which will assist us in our forthcoming operations.”
