HEROIC police dog Reggie – who was crowned Animal of the Year at the Police Bravery Awards this year – has been forced into retirement due to an injury.
PD Reggie was involved in catching a criminal who stole a skip lorry from Rotherham and drove it down the M1 in Barnsley last year.
When the driver fled, the seven-year-old Belgian Malinoi sprang into action and caught the suspect.
However, the brave pup – who is from the last litter of dogs bred by South Yorkshire Police – will now be hanging up his collar as he takes to retirement.
Following an injury, the decision was made for him to retire from policing to ensure his wellbeing – he will now live with one of his previous handlers who also retired from the force recently.
He is retiring alongside PD Benson, an eight-year-old Dutch Herder.
Over the years the two have been responsible for over 200 arrests.
