A LOCAL fitness coach is taking on a new challenge with his team to raise money to continue a care home initiative which is close to his heart.
David Wilkinson, from Royston, works for Grassroots Sports Academy Yorkshire and over the last two years they have been working with care homes to keep residents active using games and activities.
The company offers six weeks of free activities in local care homes aimed at enhancing residents’ lives by getting them active in fun ways and interacting more.
David has undertaken several fundraising activities to raise money to fund the programme which is delivered as part of GSA COMMUNITY CIC, the charity arm of Grassroots Sports Academy Yorkshire.
Now, David and his Bear’s Den fitness classes’ team are preparing for a sponsored 10k walk, starting at Rabbit Ings, Royston, on the weekend of March 8 and 9 to fund more sessions.
David said: “We have done a lot of work with Dearnlea care home after our company owner Chris Newton’s dad became a resident there and Chris still pays for those sessions out of his own pocket.
“The sessions went down so well and we really enjoy going along and have really bonded with the elderly people there.
“We have had so much success with our work and it has had a massive impact on residents' overall wellbeing that we have already worked with that it's something we as a company are very passionate about.”
