THE recent closure of the Elsecar Chrysanthemum and Gardening Society has helped unearth a picture from one of the group’s early shows.

It has been submitted by Jean Dyson whose father WH Hargreaves and uncle Harry Baldock were founding members of the society. The picture is from the opening of the show in November 1948.

She said: “I well remember all the excitement in our household when my father and grandfather were arranging their exhibits for the shows.”

Jean now lives in Florida, USA.

The group has made the tough call to shut down its operations after 80 years due to a dwindling membership and lack of new blood.
