BARNSLEY FAMILIES with low income who have young children could be given vouchers for free fruit and vegetables from Barnsley market.
The project follows a bid by Barnsley Council Family Centre to The Alexandra Rose Charity, which developed the Rose Vouchers for Fruit and Veg project to help young families make and afford healthy choices while supporting local markets.
The Barnsley scheme will be the first Rose Voucher project to take place outside of London, and will initially involve between 80 and 120 families served by the Central Area Family Centres - Kendray and Worsbrough, Worsbrough Common, Stairfoot, Dodworth and Monk Bretton - over a 12 month period.
The project will work with Family Centre staff to identify families who could benefit from the scheme.
The vouchers can only be redeemed for fresh fruit and vegetables at Barnsley Market and it is hoped that the project will introduce a whole new generation to the joys of market shopping.
