SOUTH Yorkshire Police have joined up with the fire service and Barnsley Council in a bid to tackle arsonists across the borough.

Officers from Barnsley West’s Neighbourhood Policing Team say that in recent weeks they have seen an increase in the number of deliberate fires.

The area – which covers Dodworth, Penistone and Hoylandswaine – has subsequently seen an increase in patrols.

And officers are keen to point out the consequences for those who start the fires.

A spokesperson said: “Over recent weeks we have seen an increase in fires being set.

“Together with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and the council we have increased our patrols and engagement about the setting of such fires.

“If anyone has any concerns please speak to officers when you see them out and about.

“Arson is the offence of causing criminal damage by fire.

“If convicted of arson you may be liable for a custodial sentence ranging from one to 12 years in prison.

“For the most serious exceptional cases life imprisonment can be sentenced.

“All fires are serious and can quickly burn out of control and can pose a threat to property and life.”
