A MOTORIST will appear before Barnsley magistrates next month after police received reports on Saturday night of a vehicle swerving across the lanes of the M1 and causing a risk to other road users.

A police spokesperson said: “On Saturday (February 8), just before 9pm we received a call for reports of concern around a driver’s behaviour on the M1.

“The reports alleged that the driver of a grey Mitsubishi L200 was swerving across the lanes and causing a risk to other road users.

“Roads policing officers were guided to the location with the help of the person reporting and were able to find the vehicle.”

Officers stopped the vehicle in West Yorkshire, at junction 41 of the motorway and the driver was breathalysed at the roadside and blew over twice the legal limit.

Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings said: “We all have a responsibility to create safer roads.

Getting behind the wheel after you have had a drink is selfish and irresponsible, you could kill an innocent person or family with your actions.

“One in six fatal collisions involves a drink driver; it is not worth the risk.

“We’re thankful to our communities who raise their concerns regarding those who pose a risk on our roads, your support in helping us to reduce casualties does not go unnoticed.”

The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed limit and will now appear before Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on March 5 2025.
