COUNCILLORS in Royston rolled up their sleeves and worked alongside volunteers to tackle fly-tipping in the area.
The collective effort on Monday was supported by the council’s neighbourhood services.
Scott Dike, a crucial watercourse that drains land close to the Redwood children’s play area, has experienced reduced water flow in recent years.
The work performed on Monday was organised with Royston Green Spaces Group who commit to make practical environmental improvements on the first Monday of every month.
Councillors Caroline Makinson and Pauline McCarthy were both at the event.
They said: “This has been a great community effort to clear up this watercourse.
“Hopefully, the work performed today will help reduce the fear of flooding in this area.
“This collaboration between Royston ward councillors, community volunteers, and Barnsley Council neighbourhood services here today highlights the importance of community spirit and teamwork in addressing local environmental challenges.
“Their dedication to improving the local environment is a testament to the strength and resilience of the Royston community.
“We would like to thank all those who volunteered to help with the dike clearance.”
