THE winners of Barnsley Council’s Penistone Sheep Trail art competition have been revealed.
This contest was held to celebrate the art and creativity of young people and encourage everyone to explore the trail.
It was officially launched last October, with six characters dotted around town, including a cycling sheep, a bookworm sheep and a roller-skating sheep.
Earlier this year, the council invited young people from the Penistone area to draw a picture of their favourite sheep on the trail and suggest a name.
The winners were Freddie Swift, of Silkstone Junior and Infant School, who chose the name Sandra for the cycling sheep on the Trans Pennine Trail.
Leo Clayton, also of Silkstone Junior and Infant School, who picked the name Woolly Wilson for the book-reading sheep outside Penistone Library.
Ethan Watmough, of Cawthorne Primary School, who suggested the name Poppy for the sheep outside the Penistone Paramount Cinema.
Ava Helliwell, who drew one of the sheep benches outside Penistone Market Barn and selected the name Ava Saver.
Coun Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “My fellow judges and I were so impressed with the entries for our Penistone Sheep Trail art competition.
“Well done to everyone who took part, and congratulations to our winners.
“We’ve had some great feedback about the Penistone Sheep Trail so far, and I hope everyone will continue to have fun following the trail of woolly wonders and exploring what this beautiful market town has to offer.”
