RESIDENTS will be hearing church bells for years to come after Barnsley Council completed an investigation following a complaint.
Earlier this month it was confirmed that the council were investigating a complaint about the bell-ringing schedule at St Paul’s Church, Monk Bretton.
They have been ringing around the village for almost 200 years – but locals were concerned they may have to stop due to the investigation.
However, it was confirmed this week that no action will be taken against the church.
Coun Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, said: “In line with our statutory duty we have carried out a full investigation which has now concluded.
“We can confirm we aren’t taking any action.”
Father Darren Percival admits he has been humbled by the support of the local community who have backed the church following the complaint.
He said: “One of the beauties of ministering in a parish such as Monk Bretton is wherever I am in the village I can hear the bells of St Paul’s Church.
“The same sound has rung out for weddings, funerals, mining disasters and coronations.
“I am humbled by how the village has come together to support them continuing to chime as they have done for 146 years.
“People take comfort from hearing them throughout the night and day and are proud to call them ‘their bells’, as they are part of the rich tapestry of the faith and heritage of our community.
“I am deeply aware the outcome may not be to everyone’s satisfaction, but St Paul’s remains committed to engaging with the community through missional activities, enabling St Paul’s to be a beacon of hope to all.”
