A BARNSLEY MP spoke out about securing a better deal for former miners at the Coalfields Regeneration Trust’s 25th anniversary celebration.

The event discussed the issues that still face coalfield communities like Barnsley, such as health issues, employment, regeneration and miners’ pensions.

Stephanie Peacock, who represents Barnsley South, has worked with the trust on many occasions throughout her time as one of Barnsley’s MPs on a number of issues, including on the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme.

The MP’s campaign on this issue helped to secure a commitment in the 2024 Labour Party manifesto to delivering justice on the scheme, which Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband MP, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to in his conference speech.

Stephanie said: “The trust has been essential in representing former coalfield areas to ensure that former mineworkers get the justice they deserve. It has been a pleasure to work with them on a number of issues on behalf of the former mineworkers.

“I was pleased to discuss the issues that still face former mining communities.

“It was also great to hear from Ed, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering justice on the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme in his conference speech.”
