A WOULD-BE operator with credibility in the international airport sector has been identified to take over the running of South Yorkshire’s only airport.

The preferred bidder’s identity still remains under wraps but leaders revealed this week that the firm – which is in talks to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport by 2026 – has a proven track record in the industry.

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard expressed a desire in speaking to campaigners who fought tirelessly to keep the venue – which closed in 2022 – open and gauge their opinions.

“The sensible approach is to do this deal properly, and do the deal absolutely as quickly as we can but to make sure we give DSA the best possible future, the most sustainable future going forward and the biggest and best chance to succeed,” he added.
