A BARNSLEY man has been commended for his actions and bravery following a dog attack earlier this year.

On July 3, Jon Robinson was inside his home when he heard a man shouting in a nearby park.

Jon immediately went to help, and as he got closer to the cries for help, he could see that a Japanese Akita was attacking a man and his own dog.

Jon intervened, securing the Japanese Akita until officers arrived.

The dog, which had escaped its property, had been involved in a further reported incident earlier that day involving two innocent children, leaving them with wounds requiring hospital treatment.

The dog was seized and has since been put to sleep. Police say that a man and woman were arrested and investigations continues.

The victim’s dog required surgery to save its life.

Leading the work on dangerous dogs in South Yorkshire, Chief Inspector Emma Cheney said:: “We are continuing to see dangerous dogs causing fear and harm in our communities.

“On this morning, this dog had already caused injury to two small children before heading into a nearby park during a time more children were walking to school.

“Jon’s actions ensured that the dog didn’t pose any further risk to our communities, and I commend him for his bravery.”

Jon was presented with a Chief Superintendent’s Commendation from Barnsley district commander Simon Wanless by Neighbourhood Inspector Rebecca Richardson at a celebration breakfast, organised by Barnsley Council yesterday.
