A CARE home is hoping to collect 250 boxes full of Christmas presents for elderly residents across the borough who will be spending this festive season alone.

The Adopt a Grandparent scheme is back for the fourth year at Thornhill House Care Home in Darfield, which encourages locals to wrap up a shoe box with gifts that can be given to lonely residents in homes across Barnsley on Christmas Day.

Last year, the team managed to collect more than 200 boxes, but that still wasn’t enough to meet the demand and so are raising their goal to 250 this time around.

Manager Christian Whiteley‑Mason said: “To be honest we’re getting more and more requests each year.

“Last year we got about 225 boxes, but had requests from 265 people.

“We’re already getting requests from homes across the community asking if we’re putting it back on again.

“We still get loads of people thanking us for sending in these boxes.”

Pupils from Outwood Primary Academy Darfield will be making cards for the boxes, while All Saints Academy will help with wrapping.

“If we don’t make up these shoe boxes, then residents without family will only get what we give them on Christmas,” Christian added.

Anyone wanting more details can call the home on 751703 and all boxes must be ready by December 12.
