A LOCAL business has launched an initiative to help pensioners who may be facing the choice between heating or eating this winter.

Spudz, in the Market Kitchen, has announced a two-pronged campaign to provide free or cheap meals from next week.

A spokesperson said: “We were shocked and saddened to hear of the government’s decision to revoke winter fuel payments for the most vulnerable of people this year.

“We would hate to hear that people had to make a choice between heating or eating.”

The restaurant is adding a new item to its menu – the invisible winter warmer meal.

This will be a charitable donation of £3.50 that any customer can make at any time. This donation will then be used to purchase an OAP meal meaning the next OAP order will be free of charge for them.

“We will print off a ticket and hang the ticket up ready for the next OAP to come along and take a free meal and warm drink,” said the spokesperson.

Also, starting next week and running throughout winter, Spudz is offering all over 60s a discounted meal. £2.50 will get you a jacket with 2 toppings and an extra £1 will get you a warm cup of tea or coffee.

“Together, with your support, we aim to provide a safe environment for our senior citizens who have given so much throughout their lifetime to feel welcomed, warm and well fed.

The Bright House Group has donated the first 20 winter warmer meals.
