MORE than 100 drivers and passengers were injured in collisions on icy roads in South Yorkshire over the latest five-year period, it has been revealed.
Analysis of data from the Department for Transport show South Yorkshire Police recorded 131 casualties from collisions where there was ice or frost on the road between 2019 and 2023 – including a fatality in 2022.
Over five years, December was the worst month of the year for casualties, with an average of 11 injuries each month. Meanwhile, January saw an average of eight.
There were 32 casualties on frozen roads in South Yorkshire across the whole of 2023, the most recent year of data.
’Snowy’ conditions are recorded separately – the county saw 58 casualties on snowy roads between 2019 and 2023.
