PLANS to build a new community hub in the heart of Thurnscoe have been submitted to Barnsley Council.

The scheme – which would see a community hub, cafe, play area and car park built at Phoenix Park – is being funded through Levelling Up funding.

It’s hoped the new hub would help a number of community groups across the area, whilst also improving local amenities and the every day life of residents.

A report states: “New community facilities such as meeting places should be located centrally to the communities they serve in places where they will be accessible by walking, cycling and public transport.

“The proposed community hub shall provide a new meeting place for local community groups.

“The flexible space area shall be open to groups to use for such uses as workshops, meetings, talks and a range of activities based on the group’s purpose.

“Any money made by the cafe goes into the running of the building and the provision of the space for community groups would not be financially viable without the cafe.

“Therefore the cafe is a vital part of providing the community facility.”

Two neighbouring properties have been made aware of the plans with no appeals to date.

Public consultation ends on September 27.
