A PUBLIC meeting is set to be held to discuss plans to build a solar farm the size of more than 160 football pitches in Grimethorpe.

The sprawling site off Engine Lane, Grimethorpe will eventually generate enough power for the national grid to supply almost 23,000 homes.

Enviromena, the clean energy solutions company behind the plans, says the solar farm will be created on three parcels of agricultural land.

And at the end of its 40-year operational life, the equipment will be removed, and recycled, with the entire site then restored to its original form.

The plans were originally mooted more than a year ago but, following a heated public meeting last year, no formal application has been submitted.

However, plans are starting to pick up pace with residents being invited to a public meeting in the near future.

A spokesperson for Enviromena said: “Enviromena is still finalising plans but hope to be in a position to proceed with the planning application towards the end of the summer.

“There are also plans to hold a public event prior to submitting planning and will provide full details of this event once available.”
