THE historic Barnsley Bitter is being kept alive by two local lads.
Last May may have seen the closure of Oakwell Brewery, but Thomas Gill, 24, and Dr Adam Hague, 25, were determined not to let the beer disappear.
They chipped together to buy the redundant brewing equipment from Oakwell and then set about looking for somewhere to brew.
They settled on Stancill Brewery in Sheffield, insisting the city's softer water makes for a better taste.
Former Oakwell head brewer Jonathan Stancill, who has more than 30 years' experience in the industry, is also on board with the project.
"We tried to find a place in Barnsley for a long time but there were three problems: the water, the building and the gas," said Thomas.
"As soon as we saw this place we couldn't refuse it. We saw the opportunity to brew the drink again - we are keeping Barnsley Bitter alive."
