A SHOP owner has been praised by a councillor for doing his bit for local elderly people.

Many who live on the Churchfields estate in Thurgoland have been unable to get out for supplies following the weekend snow which subsequently turned to ice this week as temperatures plummeted.

Mohammed Khan, who runs Thurgoland General Stores, was concerned about his customers’ welfare and decided to make up free food parcels for those who were reluctant to leave their homes due to the treacherous under-foot conditions.

Coun Alex Burnett said: “We’ve been hit badly by the cold weather but Mr Khan ensured locals did not go hungry.

“Packages contained bread, biscuits, soup and other bits. He asked on social media for someone to deliver them so I went and passed them on to elderly people.

“Residents were very grateful to him and I thought highlighting his kindness would be a good way of thanking him.”
