POLICE have warned that modern slavery still exists and is nearer than people think.
Today marks the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery and police say that an estimated 136,000 people in the UK are trapped in modern slavery according to the Global Slavery Index.
A police spokesperson said: “It is happening in South Yorkshire, hidden in plain sight in the streets where we all live and work.
“We are committed to rooting out criminals who exploit others through forced labour, domestic servitude, sexual exploitation and criminal exploitation.
“Everyone deserves to live their life free of coercion, control and fear.”
There is no typical victim of slavery – vulnerable people of all ages are forced to work illegally, against their will in different sectors including brothels, cannabis farms, nail bars, agriculture, car washes and even people’s homes.
“You can help us in the fight against modern slavery by spotting the signs of modern slavery and trafficking and reporting your concerns to us.”
SIgns include:
Victims being compelled to work long hours
Excessive dependence on employers
Poor living conditions
Wages being withheld or excessive wage reductions
Restriction of movement and confinement to the workplace
Physical injuries and evidence of physical abuse
Someone who is uncommunicative, tense and fails to make eye contact
Signs of sexual abuse, and/or sexually transmitted diseases
“If you suspect something, please report to us ➡️ https://orlo.uk/gQXb3 “ the spokesperson added.
