POLICE have issued advice to businesses to help them in the fight against retail crime.

They have identified seven tell-tale signs for spotting a shoplifter.

A police spokesperson said: “They don’t always look as you’d expect and can often blend in with other shoppers to avoid detection.

“However, they are some tell-tale signs you can look out for to help keep your business safe from shoplifters.”

So, make sure you keep an eye on shoppers who:

1) Seem to be watching you and the staff rather than shopping, and may be waiting for the right moment to steal an item;

2) Seem to want to keep your attention and talk for the sake of it – possibly because an accomplice is elsewhere stealing;

3) Look like they’re taking little notice of your products;

4) Seem a little nervous and are possibly picking up random items with little interest;

5) Keep refusing your offer of help or assistance;

6) Frequently enter your store and never make a purchase;

7) Want you to unlock and open cabinets but don’t buy anything.

“The seven tips above don't necessarily mean the person is guilty – and be aware that you are responsible for your behaviour, both legally and commercially. However, it is worth keeping an eye out for these traits and tactics while you’re on the shop floor.”

Polica advise that many shoplifters dress smartly and will often speak to you, joke with you and engage with you. They don’t always work alone, and they may try to relax or distract you while an accomplice steals items. They’re good at creating diversions, especially when you’ve unlocked a cabinet.

“If you’re a shopkeeper, retail worker or business owner, make sure you don’t fall for it and always get staff to assist you if your suspicions are raised. Don’t fall for it. Get one of your staff to assist you.

“If you see a shoplifter in action, ask them politely to put the item back, but be careful to keep your tone neutral and back off if you feel threatened.

“Always be sure they’ve taken something before you speak to them – and only if you feel it’s safe to do so.

“Once you're sure that they are indeed a shoplifter and a crime is in action, call 999.”
