THE family of an avid walker who died recently have raised almost a thousand pounds for his chosen charity.
Philip Shaw, who died on September 24, aged 75, enjoyed walking and climbing, including in the Peak District, for many years when he was younger and he had also climbed Ben Nevis and Snowdon.
Philip, who worked at Darfield pit for many years, was originally from Wombwell but latterly lived in Darfield.
Last week his family – including his widow, Diane, son Marcus, his wife Anneliese, daughter Zann and her husband Neil – visited the Woodhead Mountain Rescue headquarters and presented the team there with a cheque for £940.
Marcus said: “It was what Dad wanted – he had a lot of respect for the charity.
"We were amazed by how much money was raised. There was a collection at Dad’s wake and then other friends also wanted to donate. We’re not a large family but Dad was well-known and people attended the funeral from as far away as Scotland and Devon. There weren’t enough seats at the crematorium for everyone.
"The mountain rescue team were exceptionally grateful for the donation and were very welcoming."
