AN annual vigil in memory of drowned asylum seekers will take place at Locke Park Tower later this month.

The vigils began following the sinking of a dinghy carrying 30 people of whom at least 27 drowned in November 2021.

Each year since there has been a candle light gathering at the tower to remember the tragedies that happen regularly in the Channel.

At least 199 migrants died attempting to cross the English Channel between 2018 and October 2024.

The event, which will take place on Sunday, November 24, is held by Barnsley Borough City of Sanctuary and Barnsley Stand Up To Racism.

Kevin William, from the Friends of Locke Park, said: “Locke Park Tower is at the highest point in Barnsley so it provides a protective cover for our town.

“It is a good symbol of the care and protection we want to display to all who are fleeing persecution and despair.”
