BARNSLEY town centre’s recently improved CCTV proved ‘invaluable’ in stopping disorder escalations at an immigration protest.

The event, held on August 8 outside the town hall, saw scores of people turn up as well as a pro-immigration demonstration.

Several were arrested, but the area’s CCTV - notably on Market Hill, Shambles Street and Church Street - were all lauded by police for the coverage cameras provided.

A report said: “This quarter, there have been comprehensive successes achieved utilising Barnsley’s improved and far-reaching CCTV infrastructure, which also proved invaluable for the real-time management of the recent anti-immigration protest in Barnsley town centre.”
