POLICE have vowed to increase their presence in two Barnsley areas to stop illegal off-road vehicles.
The spotlight has fallen on Dodworth and Gilroyd after residents reported a rise in bikers causing ‘alarm and distress’ to the community.
A police spokesperson said: “We have had numerous calls and we have increased our presence in both villages – mainly Gilroyd – in an attempt to identify riders, stop them and seize vehicles where appropriate.
“We have already given out a number of antisocial behaviour warning to those riding in an antisocial fashion and we have seized vehicles.
“We are working with community residents, local councillors and partners to ensure living and working in the area is a safe place for all road users.”
Officers have lalso aunched ‘Operation Musician Bravo’ – forming a so-called ‘battle group’ of neighbourhood police, traffic cops and marked and unmarked vehicles – in response to concerns which have caused damage to fields.
South Yorkshire Police’s off-road biking team also recently took delivery of two quads which will allow officers to trail yobs responsible.
The spokesperson added: “We will seek support from colleagues in the off-road bike team, taking positive action against offenders.
“We continue to conduct traffic operations, targeting areas identified by the local community, residents and councillors.
“If you see off-road bikes being driven in a dangerous or antisocial manner or using footpaths and private land, please report it via 101 or online via the website.
“The police’s off-road biking team is highly valued and rated.”
