SOME of the leading cycling teams in the world will be heading to Barnsley as part of the Tour of Britain.

Barnsley will host stage three of this year’s tour with a finish in the town centre on September 5.

Four teams from the highest level of the sport, UCI World, will be competing.

They include the only British team at that level, Ineos Grenadiers, who have former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas and two-time Olympic champion Tom Pidcock amongst their ranks.

Belgian powerhouse Soudal Quick-Step, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL from the Netherlands and Bahrain Victorious make up the quartet.

UCI Pro teams Israel Premier Tech, Norwegian Uno-X and Q36.5 of Switzerland will also be taking part along with a host of other smaller teams.

Two-time champion Wout van Aert will not be here to defend his title as Visma-Lease a Bike won’t be competing.

It remains to be seen which big names will be taking part in the race as it clashes with the Vuelta a Espana grand tour.

The team line-ups are likely to be announced the week before the race begins in Scotland on September 3.
