THERE are almost 400 sports facilities for residents to use across Barnsley, it has been revealed.
Sport England data shows there are currently 384 sports facilities in the area.
While three in five were grass pitches, there were also 23 gyms, 39 sports halls and 15 swimming pools.
Barnsley also has ten outdoor tennis courts and five squash courts.
Barnsley had a sports facility for every 637 residents, or 1,620 excluding grass pitches.
Across the country these figures were 584 and 1,121 respectively.
Across England, around 77 per cent of facilities registered with Sport England are classed as ‘publicly accessible’ – which includes those that are free to use, ‘pay and play’, and sports clubs.
The remainder are private. In Barnsley, 81 per cent are publicly accessible.
