THE children’s area of Wombwell Library has re-opened its doors following an exciting refurbishment.
The updated space features a sensory story wall, cosy hideaways, bespoke furniture, tiered soft seating and new shelving with all the new additions being installed whilst preserving the historic character of the building.
As the only still-operating Carnegie library in the borough, Wombwell Library is a beautiful example of the early 1900s’ public library architecture and style. Historic features such as parquet flooring have also been restored to give it a new lease of life.
Coun Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: “Wombwell Library joins a list of other libraries that have seen major transformations across the borough over the past couple of years.
“We hope that the updated children’s area at Wombwell Library will inspire and create more opportunities for children and young people to fall in love with their local library.”

Refurbishment of the children’s area at Wombwell Library is funded by a £65,570 grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Libraries Improvement Fund, administered by Arts Council England.
