A MAN who’s well known in the Old Town community for his cheeky jokes and huge smile has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award for his work in the area.
Bob Sharpe, 83, is a former firefighter – but his work to tidy up the area in which he lives has gained the support from his neighbours.
He regularly takes part in litter picks and clear graffiti off walls, as well as being a part of neighbourhood watch.
He said: “All I’ve done whilst I’ve lived here is to try and improve the area and over the past, through the residents association – of which I’m the chairperson – I’ve asked for help from the council about keeping the Old Town green cut.
“I persuaded them to put trees on, I’ve gone round and cleaned and picked dog dirt up.
“I’ve generally tried to just be a good neighbour.
“When we first moved here it was rough and when the grass was cut we had to close our windows because of the smell of dog faeces.
“It’s now a lot better and in the main most people clean up after themselves.
“I’ve encouraged people to get involved with the community and pre-pandemic we used to put on carnivals and dances at the church hall.”
Upon hearing of his nomination in the community hero category, Bob added: “I’m shocked – very, very shocked.
“It’s really nice to be nominated.”
