A GROUP of volunteers who clean up Barnsley’s streets admit they were disappointed after clearing more than 30 bags of rubbish during just one pick.
The Greenspace Group regularly meet to clean up Barnsley and Saturday was no different as they attempted to clear up the Darton area.
A spokesperson said: “The volunteers were fantastic and worked really well, but the amount of litter was terrible. Do people just not care?
“More than 30 bags were filled, the amount of vodka and beer bottles, beer cans, energy drinks was stunning.
“For example three bags were picked on Mill Lane Darton.
“This is a small road near the train station.
“Lots were picked on Bloom House Lane, Shaw Lane and Wakefield Road.
“We only just scraped the surface, we could have picked a lot more.”
Coun Steve Hunt, who represents the Darton East ward, was part of the volunteering group.
He added: “Volunteering as part of the Greenspace Group litter pick on Saturday morning who picked a whopping and saddening circa 30 bags of litter, we tidied up the area by benches adjacent to Woolley Colliery Road, reported graffiti and fly tipping (an old toilet near Bloomhouse Lane).
“Sadly these problems don’t seem to be improving but we will keep volunteering away alongside our wonderful community groups to keep our area looking as tidy as possible.”
