FIVE new blue plaques were installed in Barnsley town centre on Saturday – recognising the town’s rich history.
Blue plaques are put up to recognise a building or place’s connection with a significant person from the town or with an event in history.
Plaques were installed to honour Ann Porter, the founder of Barnsley’s first department store catering specifically to women, Eldon Street architect John Whitworth, stonemason Catherine Mawer, poet Thomas Lister and Matthew and Eliza Wardhaugh, the creators of Barnsley’s first wooden theatre.
