AN off-duty sergeant jumped into action after witnessing a dangerous driver collide with a stationary vehicle.
Last Tuesday, at around 3.30pm, Sgt Gary Reece was travelling along Barnsley Road in Dodworth when he witnessed the incident.
Concerned, he stopped to help, though immediately smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath.
Sgt Reece informed the driver that he was an off-duty officer and that he must remain on the scene, but the driver quickly attempted to flee.
He jumped into action, apprehending the driver until support arrived.
The driver was breathalysed and blew nearly four times over the legal limit of alcohol – he was taken to hospital for medical checks.
A 39-year-old man was charged with driving while unfit in connection to the incident and will appear before Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on November 27.
