A GROUP of nature-loving volunteers headed into the woods last week for some unique eco-friendly work.
The four volunteers from Twiggs Clean and Green Team explored the Trans Pennine Trail in Stairfoot last Friday, foraging for apple and chestnut tree seeds.
Their work was supported by volunteers from Barnsley Main Heritage Group, Recovery College and Hope in the Community, with bottles of water donated from Asda to keep them going throughout the day.
These seeds are now going to be used to create a tree nursery at the Carers’ Garden at the back of the Metrodome, with volunteers potting them up on Wednesday.
Community development and engagement officer, Adam Roberts, said “We try to involve volunteers in our operations, but have started doing a few more different things to make it all more enjoyable.
“So we got this group together to go out foraging – unfortunately by the time we arrived the squirrels had got most of the sweet chestnuts.
“This year many of them didn’t grow that big either, but we did get a few.
“It was just a good day out to get some exercise, get involved in nature and meet new people.
“We had lots of fun.”
