HOUSE prices dropped at a faster rate in Barnsley than they did across Yorkshire and the Humber in July, latest figures show.
The average Barnsley house price in July was £165,820 – a 0.8 per cent decrease on June.
Over the month, the picture was similar to that across Yorkshire and the Humber, where prices decreased 0.5 per cent, and Barnsley was lower than the 0.6 per cent rise for the UK as a whole.
Over the last year, the average sale price of property in Barnsley rose by £6,400 – putting the area eighth among Yorkshire and the Humber’s 15 local authorities with price data for annual growth.
First-time buyers in Barnsley spent an average of £147,600 on their property – £5,900 more than a year ago, and £37,000 more than in July 2019.
By comparison, former owner-occupiers paid £183,900 on average in July – 24.5 per cent more than first-time buyers.
Buyers paid 22.8 per cent less than the average price in Yorkshire and the Humber in July for a property in Barnsley.
Across Yorkshire and the Humber, property prices are low compared to those across the UK, where the average cost is £290,000.
The most expensive properties in Yorkshire and the Humber were in York – £321,000 on average, and 1.9 times the price as in Barnsley.
York properties cost 2.3 times the price as homes in Hull at the other end of the scale.
The highest property prices across the UK were in Kensington and Chelsea.
