BARNSLEY Council has announced a comprehensive support plan for pensioners amid winter fuel allowances changes.

The council has said it is committed to ensuring that all of our pensioners have the support they need to stay warm and well this winter.

In light of recent changes to the Winter Fuel Allowance, which will now be restricted to those on Pension Credit or other low-income benefits, the council is taking proactive measures to protect and assist residents.

A council spokesperson said: “We will utilise the Household Support Fund, funded by the UK Government, to provide crucial aid to those who may not qualify for the Winter Fuel Allowance, ensuring that no one is left without the help they need during the colder months.

“To further support our pensioners, the council is launching a comprehensive campaign to encourage the uptake of Pension Credit across Barnsley. As part of this initiative, we will hold drop-in sessions with qualified staff to help residents complete their Pension Credit applications, making it easier for all eligible pensioners to access the benefits they deserve."

All details of these initiatives, including information on drop-in sessions and other available support, can be found on the council’s 'More Money in Your Pocket' website. The site features a user-friendly Pension Credit calculator, allowing residents to quickly estimate what they might be entitled to receive. It also provides a comprehensive overview of all the support available in Barnsley, serving as a valuable resource for anyone seeking financial assistance.

For those who may not be eligible for Pension Credit or who miss the deadline to receive the Winter Fuel Allowance, the council says it remains committed to offering additional support.

“We will work closely with community groups throughout the borough to ensure that everyone has access to the necessary help this winter.”

Coun Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: “We want our residents to know that we are here to support them, especially our pensioners who may be facing financial challenges. We know there are people in Barnsley who are eligible for Pension Credit but are not yet claiming it, and we are committed to helping them access the benefits they deserve. By taking these proactive steps, Barnsley Council is working to ensure that all our residents can access a range of support this winter."
