BARNSLEY Market has been named the best indoor market in the country.

The gong was awarded by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) at its annual awards ceremony and conference in Birmingham today (January 25).

The market's entry was recognised for its investment in its temporary markets, partnership working with Barnsley College and the NHS, and its Youth Market Programme.

The winning entry highlighted the work the council has done with traders to encourage them to improve customer service by offering credit and debit card payment options, as well as the recently launched town centre click and collect initiative ShopAppy.com.

The award also recognised the training market traders have been offered on how to use social media to promote their businesses, including the wider market and all that it has to offer.

Coun Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place said: “This is fantastic news for Barnsley and a great honour to be recognised as the best indoor market in the country.

"I am delighted to hear that the judges were impressed by the innovative work our markets team has undertaken. It’s a huge accolade to receive an award like this and have the market traders and the markets team acknowledged for their hard work."
