BARNSLEY is to at last get a department store after Debenhams announced they will be moving in to the town.

Wilson Bowden and Ashcroft have signed Debenhams as the first anchor store for the Marketplace Barnsley scheme - which is due for completion in 2015

Debenhams will be taking 75,000sq ft on a 25-year lease - it will have two stores and a restaurant.

A spokesman for the company said: "The deal brings to an end Barnsley's record of being the largest town in the UK without a department store."

The town centre plans include a seven-screen cinema, 35 new shops and a new market.

Ashcroft and Wilson Bowden have now appointed property consultants GCW to work alongside Jones Lang LaSalle as joint letting agents on the Marketplace Barnsley scheme.
