A BARNSLEY apprentice has been recognised for his work in restoring and relocating a local war memorial.

Peter Harper, who is currently doing a Level 4 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Practitioner Higher Apprenticeship at Barnsley College, coordinated the project with the support of local businesses and members of the community to restore Wombwell Reform Club War Memorial from its former home.

The memorial, which was a tribute to the soldiers who served in the First World War, was carefully removed from a shopping centre in Wombwell which was set to be demolished, before being meticulously cleaned, restored and relocated to its new home in the heart of Wombwell.

Over a nine-month period, Peter, who is Sustainability Lead at Cranswick Valley Park, dedicated over 115 hours of his time planning, organising, and facilitating the removal and relocation of the war memorial. From meetings with the council, to getting hands on during the removal and reconstruction, playing a significant role in this successful community project.

Peter represented Cranswick at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards 2024, where the company was awarded the Business Community Impact Award for their involvement in this and other community projects.

Peter said of his apprenticeship: “I’ve always been passionate about caring for the environment and engaging with the community. However, I never fully understood the different aspects of sustainability and how businesses can be involved in sustainability.

“My apprenticeship has provided me with the knowledge and tools to see how businesses can go beyond participation and become an integral part of society, promoting a more sustainable future for Cranswick and the wider community.”
