A LOCAL church has launched a warm spaces initiative to help residents beat the winter blues.

St John the Baptist Church in Penistone is inviting residents along to join in activities such as dominoes and other games, warm food, friendship and a warm space.

St John’s, in the heart of Penistone, will be opening its doors to everyone in the community on Thursday and Saturday mornings in January, February and March, as part of the Warm Spaces initiative funded by The Better Barnsley Bond, in conjunction with Barnsley Council, Wates and Berneslai Homes.

Father David Hopkin of St John’s Church said: “The church will provide a safe, welcoming, warm space for all, where people of all ages can meet friends old and new, keep warm, have warm food, play games and interact with others, helping with social isolation and loneliness.

“Additional support will be provided by linking people with organisations such as Penistone Food Buddies, providing information on how to cook healthy meals on a budget and the provision of a quiet space within the Church if necessary.

“Why not pop in – you’ll be made most welcome!”
