STAFF at Barnsley College were invited to the House of Lords last week as they secured finalist spots in national awards.

The team were recognised in both the Staff Volunteer of the Year and the Team/College Fundraiser of the Year categories in this year’s Good for Me Good for FE awards event.

The awards recognise contributions made by staff in further education facilities across the UK, and the ceremony was hosted by Baroness Barran MBE.

Nicky Thomson-Dewey, the college’s head of department for Learning for Living and Work, achieved finalist status in the volunteer category for her contribution to the Love Grace Handbag Appeal and the Barnsley Care Leavers Christmas Dinner Project.

Meanwhile, the college’s students’ union team took a top spot in the fundraiser award, for their various activities to support Barnsley Hospice which raised more than £8,000 in 2023 and 2024, adding to a total of £18,000 across previous years.

David Akeroyd, principal and CEO of Barnsley College, said: “I am incredibly proud of Nicky and the students’ union team for being shortlisted for these prestigious awards.

“Nicky’s dedication to making a difference in the community through her various charitable initiatives is truly inspiring. The students’ union team’s recognition for their incredible fundraising efforts highlights the exceptional spirit of teamwork and generosity fostered here.

“At Barnsley College, we are committed to empowering our staff and students to make wonderful contributions to the community, and it is a privilege to see their hard work and dedication acknowledged in this way.”
