RUMOURED protests impacted the footfall in the town centre over the latest three-month period, a report has revealed.

More than 2.3 million people attended the town, against the council’s target of 1.9 million.

The report added: “Quarter two was marked by numerous events in the town centre.

“July witnessed Barnsley’s Big Weekend, a two-day event that drew significant engagement.

“In August, crowds gathered for Callum Simpson’s boxing promotions with an open workout and weigh- in, as well as the Family Hubs Festival on the 31st.

“September featured the Tour of Britain cycling event, Barnsley Civic’s celebrations for the reopening of Eldon Street, the Garden Party Event on the 14th, and concluded with a four-day International Market.

“Additionally, there were five Barnsley FC home matches during the quarter, which typically increased footfall before and after the games.

“The quarter was somewhat marred by planned and rumoured protests, which significantly impacted footfall.”
