MORE than 40 pairs of slippers were handed out to local residents as part of a scheme to help prevent elderly people falling in their homes.
The Central Ward Alliance hosted a ‘Slips, Trips and Falls’ event recently in partnership with Buckley Methodist Church.
Key organisations had stalls in the church and offered advice to residents about private housing issues, smoking cessation, chair exercise classes and the police listening to residents about their concerns.
A total of 45 pairs of slippers which were given to central ward residents were supplied by Grafters.
Well-fitting slippers can prevent trips and falls in the home, the council says.
Coun Nicola Sumner said: “I am really pleased our ward alliance was able to run this event for central ward residents.
“Buckley Methodist Church are wonderful at supporting community endeavours and they really came through for us, supplying 95 hot drinks on the day.
“I know myself with family members and friends who have had a bad fall as they get older, it can lead to them losing confidence and longer-term health issues.
“It is important with well-fitting slippers in the home, to try to minimise the risk of falling. Our ward alliance has really committed volunteers who are active in our ward.
“They play an important role in steering the work of the ward alliance. Other areas for years have run slips, trips and falls events but this is the first time we have in central ward.
“We are always looking at projects to help our communities and I am sure on the back of this success, we will run something again like this.”
