AN anti-poverty programme which targets the worst-off in society is set to be extended for another year.

The scheme, co-delivered by CAB and DIAL and paid for by the North Area Council, helps people in Darton East, Darton West, Old Town and St Helen’s wards.

A two-year deal was previously signed at a cost of £215,000 with the option of a third year – costing another £110,000 – to run until the end of June in 2026.

Debt remains the biggest issue for people seeking help, followed by tax credits, Universal Credit, housing and employment.

Four daytime drop-in sessions are held across the area council’s wards, plus four ’twilight’ sessions per month in Mapplewell and Athersley.

As well as this, residents can access over-the-phone advice and more than 10,000 people have been helped over the years it’s been in place.

According to a report, councillors are set to approve the expenditure this week.

“Devolution of funding to area councils was intended to enable needs-based commissioning that would address inequality within specific geographic areas.

“Commissioning began in 2014 and the North Area Council was quick to recognise that additional information, advice and guidance provision would benefit local people.

“The North Area Council was clear that this provision should be easily accessible in local community buildings.

“From September 2015 we have commissioned CAB and DIAL to deliver provision tailored to the needs of the area.

“The anti-poverty steering group, represented by councillors from each ward, meets quarterly to review the performance of the contract and assess local need.

“Councillors have made it clear that they value this service very highly and can see the great benefit that it delivers to individuals and the wider community in terms of socio-economic impact.”
