PLANS to build a new library in Wath-upon-Dearne have been approved by the council – paving the way for an exciting ‘transformation’ of the town centre.

The £9.9m scheme, which has been funded by the government and Rotherham Council, includes a host of work in the area.

The new two-storey building will be built on the site of the existing library and public spaces around the site will also be improved as part of the project.

Library services will continue in Wath town centre while building works take place with further details set to be announced soon.

Rotherham Council consulted with local residents and businesses before drawing up final plans for the scheme earlier this year.

Public feedback was incorporated into the regeneration plans that were granted planning permission in July 2024.

It’s due to be completed by the summer of 2026.

Coun Robert Taylor, cabinet member for transport, jobs and the local economy, said: “We’re looking forward to bringing this wonderful new community building and library to Wath.

“Not only will it be pleasing on the eye, it will provide people with somewhere to enjoy events and all the cultural benefits that come with a comfortable, well-equipped modern library.”
