BARNSLEY tenants’ rent costs have climbed by more than a third in the last decade.

According to data from the Office of National Statistics, Barnsley placed fifth in the Yorkshire and Humber region which compiled towns and cities with the highest rises.

Average rents now cost £618 a month in Barnsley – 37.33 per cent more than the average of £450 in 2015.

Leeds recorded the highest rise with a 48.32 per cent hike from £745 to £1,105.
