A PROJECT which focused on capturing the life stories of house-bound residents has been shortlisted for a national award.
Barnsley Libraries’ ‘Telling Stories’ project has been shortlisted for a prestigious ‘Fantastic for Families Best Age-Friendly’ Outreach Award.
The ‘Telling Stories’ pilot project focused on capturing the life stories of house-bound residents who use the Home Library Service.
By spending time with residents and recording their oral histories, the project tackled issues of loneliness while celebrating the rich and diverse experiences of Barnsley’s older residents. These stories will form a lasting audio archive, available for other customers to enjoy. A public sharing and celebration event will be held during the Barnsley Book Festival on Monday March 3 2025 at the Library @ the Lightbox.
The project was created based on feedback from customers and designed to be fair, inclusive, and enriching for everyone involved. It highlights the power of storytelling, celebrates local history, and shows how meaningful connections can improve wellbeing.
Councillor Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: "The Telling Stories project is a shining example of how Barnsley Libraries place people at the heart of everything they do. This recognition reflects the creativity, care, and dedication of the library team to make a real difference in the lives of residents who may otherwise feel isolated. We are incredibly proud to see their efforts recognised on a national stage."
